2021 UNC Sustainability Awards

Earth Day was highlighted by the Center for Sustainable Enterprise’s › UNC Sustainability Awards, sponsored by Bank of America and Trane Technologies. This year’s virtual event included a mix-along with Scott Maitland of › Top of the Hill Brewery and Distillery and a dinner cook-along with Jacob Boehm of › Snap Pea after the ceremony.


Tracy Triggs-Matthews, the Associate Director of CSE, was honored to present the 2021 Distinguished Alumni Award to Valerie Smith (MBA ’02). Val is an MBA graduate of Kenan-Flagler Business School and serves as the Managing Director and Chief Sustainability Officer at › Citi.


› Jeff Mittelstadt, the Executive Director for CSE, recognized › Seal the Seasons as the 2021 Distinguished Business in Sustainability. This year the undergraduate › Sustainable Business Club nominated over 40 organizations doing business in North Carolina that met the criteria of innovation, initiative and impact. They then narrowed the list down and conducted interviews to arrive at the 17 finalists. Sustainable Enterprise Concentration Graduation and Awards

During the Sustainability Awards we celebrated the 48 MBA students graduating with the › Sustainable Enterprise Concentration. › Dr. Olga Hawn, CSE Faculty Director, toasted their resiliency, creativity, compassion and perseverance.


The Net Impact Award was given to Anthony Minor, outgoing President of the Energy club, recognized for “lifting everyone else up.”


The inaugural Susanna Schick award was presented to Crystal Collins. The Susanna Schick award is given to a current Kenan-Flagler MBA student demonstrating the values that Susanna Schick (MBA ’09) exemplified: environmentalism, diversity, equity and inclusion. › Read More


India Impact Challenge Ends in a Photo Finish


Congratulations to the winning student team, Green Winx, from Fundação Getulio Vargas in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Alice Grinbaum, Sophia Hess, Gabriela Pinheiro da Rocha Campos, Victória Rieser and Carol Zweig.


The first student competition to design investment strategies that tackle climate change while driving economic growth in India came down to the wire. 2021 Invest for Impact Competition


Congratulations to the winning team, 3062 Impact Investors, from Rotterdam School of Management; Ananth Reddy, Simón Andrés Abello Llanos, Navita Moodley, Johannes Radnitz and George Lampridis


On April 9, 2021 30 MBA students from around the world competed in the 15th annual Invest for Impact competition organized by the Net Impact Club at UNC Kenan-Flagler. Hosted for the first time in a virtual format, the students acted as venture capitalists, interviewing entrepreneurs whose businesses have a social impact focus, conducting due diligence, and preparing a term sheet. They then pitched their investment proposals to a team of 4 judges composed of expert VCs. › Read More


Kenan-Flagler Student Entrepreneur Wins $25,000 to Fund Her Sustainable Venture


Kirstie Moore has received $25,000 for her sustainable venture from Victoria’s Secret Pink with Purpose Project. Moore – a senior at the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School from Charlotte – is co-founder and chief marketing officer of LocalRoots Compost, which she co-founded with Mallory Wolfe Turner, a PhD student at the Gillings School of Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill. › Read More
